A journey to remember

They say there is a learning in very moment that life presents to us. I had never thought that i would be writing about a journey that i had made atleast 4 times before in the past. The answer lies in the question itself. I have done the same flight with the the same sad looking Air hostesses with their unfriendly if not rude behavior in the past. I know what to expect and more strongly know the reason for returning to the same flight time and again. So, when you know what to expect and what will come next, you dont spend time anticipating, rather you invest it in observing and trying to understand something that you have perhaps missed in the past.

It was the kind of people I met in this journey that prompted me to write this piece. I knew the journey was going to be interesting right from the start when for a change i found a taxi driver, who on arrival to the airport, got down without asking for the fare, went down the walkway, got me a trolley, loaded my seemingly heavy 20 Kg bag and then opened the door for me; and after all this he did not expect even a single rupee extra from me. This is a rarity in Bangalore considering how the Auto rickshaw drivers wait with bated breath to cheat you in broad daylight.

No Pen!! Damn. I needed a pen to fill in the immigration forms and finding this in the airport is not an easy task, since these days most of the people flying have forgotten the art of writing. I think soon schools would be giving you typing courses instead of writing. One needs to  know which key means "A", rather than knowing how it is written or said. Thankfully for me a stationary shop at the airport was still open, though it was 11.30 in the night. 10 minutes and with a minus of 45 Rs from my purse i was the proud owner of a stupid looking pen, which i guess would not have cost the manufacturer more than 10 Rs, Taxes included.

Next I meet our bloke at the AF counter ( I prefer to use AF instead of Air France since by blood boils when i have to type that name!!). With a false accent and even faker behavior of being smart and helpful, he asks me questions about immigration etc before i get irritated and cut him and say, that this is not the first time i am doing this flight. He then tries to explain that it is a procedure to help people. Later, during Security check, i was told that our bloke had forgotten to stamp my Web-Checkin boarding pass rendering it almost as valid(in) as a tissue paper in this context.Yeah, I had to go back and get the whole thing done once more!!

The flight was nothing new, except that this time the crew was behaving even more stingier. I request the Air-Hostess who is a French and I guess can speak nothing else but that. I am given water when i ask for orange juice. Further she doesn't even try to understand what i am saying when i try to clarify. I assumed that this is because she was busy. However, later i figured out that she did this because she wanted to talk with the gay-like French sitting next seat. Considering myself lucky not to be sitting next to him and holding on to my shiny engagment ring, i tried to take my mind off the wreached flight. It just showed me that some people like to be with their own kind and clearly she did not like the job. I say this because, i met another French purser, strangely on the same flight who tried his best to sound perfect in English, cracked a joke with me and gave me hot mug of coffee when he saw i was suffering from heavy cold. Thanks to the extra blast from the aircraft's ventilation.

Just when i thought that my woes were getting reduced, Varundev  got angry, causing massive turbulences. The plane was doing a Shiela ki jawani  some 20000 Feet in air when the Pilot chose to turn on the seat belt sign, while I frantically tried to find the seat belt. When i found it, i found it stuck between the seat and its back. I tugged it, pulled it, did everything i could do with the might i had...only to see that it was still stuck. The Turbulences where getting worse, i was suddenly reminded of the Air crash investigation episodes. I calmed myself down, tried to see where the damn seat belt buckle was stuck and try to slowly adjust my seat inclination and nudge the buckle between the backrest and the seat. Finally my cajoling worked and the buckle came out and i fastened it tight and said my prayers; Praying that they wouldn't me be my last. The incident drew upon me the fact that not everything can be achieved by pulling at it or going the hard way, sometimes softness works. Understanding the situation is more important then trying out the very commonly used methods.

The journey from Paris to Stuttgart was an uneventful one, except that the bloke at the security at France asked me if i could give him a Mercedes looking at the Mercedes T-Shirt i was wearing. Humble as I am, I told him that i too have been asking my boss the same question.

Last but not the least and this is not a part of journey but something that i discovered as i write this piece....I have a webcam that i purchased on the last day before the journey to Germany in India. Having never used an Webcam before; It was never needed..I did not know how the function. The cam has 6 Leds, which i couldn't get to glow as long as i was in India, trying to setup the webcam. The only control on the Webcam was a rotary knob, which up until now i was sure was to control the Microphone volume. For those who don't know, webcams come with an Integrated Mircophone. Even though my mom had begged me to try out this control, i had dismissed her suggestions knowing that she was a technology illiterate. Now i realize that that control is for the LED brightness and that my mom was right. Lesson learned- give every suggestion a patient hearing, what you cannot see, maybe the other person can, even though its not his area of expertise.

Reminds me of  How can i think outside the box, if i am made to sit inside one!!

Crank Crank Crank

It is shocking to know that people derive fun out of something that could be a matter of life & Death. The latter in most of the cases because our traffic situation ensures that one cannot get to place in time if he starts early let alone if it is an emergency.
It is not as if there are too many people taking ill all of a sudden. But of the 7,19,489 calls received in June, 40,000 were from kids simply out to play a prank.
The report here says that in many cases the adults encourage their kids to make such crank calls. The problem is that in the end we just put off these crank calls by saying that "Oh! he is just a boy!!". Sometimes a simple call done for fun or to derive some momentary enjoyment can mean that a bevy of people are on road running from pillar to post away from their loved ones, leaving perhaps more important tasks to attend to what the caller has just alerted them about.
A prank call to the police control room by an unidentified boy, sounding eight to 10 years old, Sunday afternoon that a bomb would explode in the upscale M.G. Road sent the city police into a tizzy and caused a scare in the area.
This just shows how irresponsibly can we behave at times. It is this lack of sense of responsibility in our youth that at time leads to many a crisis. Be it bomb scares or delaying flights by making hoax calls. The fact is that we just getting degrees will not help; one needs to be really educated to learn to live and also respect others lives.

Status update from Germany

I am in Germany at a good time by "Jahres Zeit" or Season and at a bad time in practical. Why good time? because the outside temperature is around 30 degrees today, the sun is shining bright and the birds are all happily chirping all around. Further to add some icing over the cake it is almost like vacation time here with schools closed and folks cycling around in their bicycles which look at times as complicated as our mopeds with around 40+ gears. Why bad time? I have very little company that is interested in going around and enjoying what nature has to offer us. Though i could travel alone everywhere, which i did a couple of times with not much fun, it is always advisable to travel in Germany in a group.

There are many reasons why group travel is better than an individual travel in Germany. For one you have company to talk to and express what you feel when you feel it. Furthermore it is extremely cheap when we travel in groups. For example a ticket to the entire Bundesland or State of BW ( Baden-Wuttenberg) will cost you around 20 € if you are alone. The same will cost you just 27€ when traveling in a group of five people...bringing it to roughly 6€ per head. If that is not just enough, you will be entitled to get some discounts at some museums if you are in a group of 5 folks.

There are many ways to travel in Europe. The car being the most common transport for an earning European. However, for folks from India who go more on a shoe-string budget...or simply get enough per Diem just to manage their meals, it is better to use the public transportation. bahn.de   is a good place to look for cheap offers to travel various places within Europe. By common sense it is clear that the slower transportation mechanisms like RE (Regional-Express) or the IRE ( Inter-Regional Express) are way cheaper than the faster trains like IC (Inter-City) or ICE. However, that does not mean that you cannot travel by the IC or ICE. The IC or ICE tickets will be very cheaply sold about 6 weeks before the day of travel. However, then you cannot afford to miss this train because the amount is not refundable and not valid on any other train too.

The big problem that i faced in booking tickets in advance was that my date of travel was not decided for a very long time. This is the reason why i could not get some good offers which otherwise would have been normally available.
Anyway so much for now....need to get ready for the office tomo...signing off until next time...chio

BlackForest tour in Germany

Though i should have done this much earlier...however earlier i had not internet in the room and no proper time too to write something on a blog. Finally i have got 4 days of free time out of which yesterday (4th of June) was the first day.....

I was at the so called and famous mostly because of the cake from here "Schwarzwald" or the "Black forest". Extremely scenic and calm, the place could be a heaven for an introvert....but was almost like hell for an extrovert. For long distances all you get to see is thick forests with a few houses here and there. Yeah and mind you most of the houses will be occupied but you will not see a single soul on the street. Yesterday being a holiday in Germany, it was more so. Thankfully to save grace and not to make my 20 Euro expenditure on the Baden-Wuttenberg ticket which allows you unlimited access to the Bus & Train network with BW for 1 whole day; I had the Triberg Wasserfall or the Triberg waterfall open. An entry fee of 3.5 € and after a huge climb you can get a great view of the waterfall. It is very nice to see how the trees provide and extremely wonderful cover. Squirrels can be seen around the waterfall and will come to you if you are kind enough to offer them some groundnuts.

Click to get the clear pic...

Also dont forget to visit the worlds biggest Kukoo clock in Triberg...apparently quite old. However, shops are very expensive and you will end up spending anywhere between 40 € and above for a good clock.

Frieburg is about 1.5 hours journey from Triberg. One search on google will tell you that this is like the capital of Schwarzwald. Well surprisingly, this place failed to impress me much. For one the tourist information center is quite a walk from the Hauptbahnhof...or the main railway station. Frieburg has a lot of churches, the old and new rathaus which can be both visited by folks who have interest in taking some pictures. The Saint Martin Kirche (Church) and the gate with the same name are some of the good tourist attractions. You can also do some shopping on Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse on a working day....Dont forget to click a pic of this bull there....

 Bottom lines-
Travel to Black forest in a group else u will be bored to death...u might as well look like this lonely bull
Take your camera with you, you should go there only to click pictures...

Travelogue- Hogenkal falls

Recently my friends and I visited Hogenekal falls. This is a waterfall about 200 odd kms from Bangalore. There are 2 different routes to reach the place. One via the highway (Nice Corridor) and other one which goes through the interior of villages. I suggest you take the smaller route in case you are leaving very early since it is really picturesque. However, the roads in this route are in a bad shape.
We left at 6.45 from Bangalore via the shorter route. After a quick breakfast at Hosur, we proceeded. The atmosphere was wonderful. At the Karnataka TN border you have to shell out about 500 bucks. 250 official 250 unofficial. After travelling for about 2.5 hours you will reach a slight Ghat section.

After giving some poses and looking worse than the monkeys sitting around, we decided it was better to proceed towards the final destination. The curvy roads are a great fun especially if you are nature lover. Next thing i remember was some Tamil mumbo jumbo and a black arm reaching out as if it would just strangle me....I woke up from my slumber to be told that we are entering the Forest area and we have to pay 20 bucks for the ticket...and 20 bucks for something else which did not provide us with a bill. Soon after paying another 20 bucks to enter the Hogenekal area we encountered this dude who started telling us about the boat ride and prices etc. We had hardly caught a breather but our dude was explaining us everything...After 20 minutes and overcoming of the initial shock I realized that we would have to shell out 300 bucks per head for a whole day boat ride.
Well let me explain....There are two major falls in Hogenekal one on the Karnataka side and other on TN side. Both on River Cavery. The area where these falls are is known as Dharmapuri (TN). There are a few small islands on the River. The current is very strong at some points and its quite deep at these points. There are round boats which are technically "Coracle". Each of these Coracles will be able to carry about 7 people excluding the navigator. They will take around on the coracles, let you take the pics of the waterfalls...Our boatman was also ( apparently) a hobby phographer...and clicked tons of photo's of our...in various poses some of them were grotesque to say the least :P.
Then after visit to one falls ( the one on TN side) we were taken to a spot where the water was no deeper than 4 feet and we could enjoy in the water. If you have some aching muscles, you can get massages done here...(using oils which you have never heard of!!). After spending a good one hour in the water with lot fun we had a lunch consisting of fish, rice and sambar. Well the food is cooked on the banks, in pots darker than anything you have seen on firewood by people who have not heard of hygiene in their life...but guys the food rocks. I enjoyed every bit of the sambar with extra chilli. Carrying your own pack of water is good idea as the packaged water is expensive and not authentic. The Karnataka side of the falls is a bit smaller but looks equally good. You can see a lot of salmons's trying to swim upstream and getting caught in the nets places by the local folks.

Over all the place is a real good one to be. Things to remember are
  • Carry Water with you if you dont want to shell out lot of bucks
  • Try to negotiate a lot....You should be able to get yourself the whole 3-4 hours journey come enjoyment for less than 200 bucks. But do this if you have sufficient people...Its fair that way since the guy has to carry the coracle on his back at many places and will spend all the time with you.
  • Carry an extra pair of clothes, you can enjoy the water ( it is really fast and you can have a great time...even though you do not know to swim).
  • Carry a lot of small change you will have to give 10 bucks for this 20 bucks for that...etc. Btw, the coracle ride will cost you 20bucks per head separately for something...i could not understand for what
  • Take a good camera...You can get some really nice shots..not like the overexposed ones you find here.
  • Start early before there is too much crowd...so that you can return early too :-D...before the Bangalore traffic threatens to kill you.
