Public Paisa Apna jaisa!!

Amit here blogs about the gross misuse of power that our governments do in order to satisfy their needs.
The report says that “it was Pranab Mukherjee who sought that Deepa be made a minister for the sake of Munshi.” If Mr Mukherjee feels such compassion for Mr Das Munshi, he should pay for the treatment out of his own pocket. Why dig into mine?
I totally agree with Amit on the point that ruling governments use their power to twist and turn law. Frankly speaking, as a stupid Indian software professional I pay almost 50% of my income to the government in terms of tax directly or indirectly. Does Pranab Mukherjee think that we are giving taxes for him to ensure that Mr Das Munshi gets his hospital care. The Apathy of the situation is such that when it comes to helping the cyclone hit people in WB it takes Mr.Bhattacharjee more than a week.
The villagers asked the chief minister why he had come to this block so late. "Why is it that the government has not been able to send relief to us even a week after the cyclone struck?"
And to add insult to injury this happens
A television channel carried a report that some relief workers were kept confined in a tin room at Sonakhali for hours by the district administration on the plea of the chief minister's safety, but officials denied the report.
In India anything really goes. Our memory is short, we dont raise our voice to injustice and we always look for our good then what is right..It is frustrating.....and sad both.

The winged Thief

In India one of the popular methods of knowing one's fortune is by a parrot picking up a card from a stack of cards on which some (supposedly) details what is in store for you in the future.
However, this particular parrot seems to have changed the fortune of a Scotmand in a dramatically and in an off-beat way.
A police spokesman in Te Anau, the nearest town, said the kea had swooped on a brightly colored courier bag containing the man's
passport when the coach made a stop and the driver opened the luggage compartment.
Well, Mr Parrot what will you do with the passport?
My passport is somewhere out there in Fiordland. The kea is probably using it for fraudulent claims or something

Funny isn't it? In India i am sure a case would have been booked against the parrot and then there would be a public prosecutor who would try to to prove that the parrot was underage ( juvenile) and hence could not be booked. Btw, what is the age before which a parrot is considered Juvenile?

Toilet Roll novel

The telgraph reports about a new type of novel which has been printed on a roll of toilet paper.
His latest work is set in a public toilet and plays on Japanese
superstitions that ghosts and evil spirits inhabit the smallest room in
the house, which is why they were traditionally relegated to the most
distant part of the home.
I am pretty sure that the publisher did not do this because of recession. Just imagine you pay so much for the novel and if your not so intuitive friend just uses it as "toilet paper", I am sure you would be heart broken....
Also imagine what will be of your friend who just has got a horror novel transferred on to his butt.

However, i think the bigger horror is the butt rather than the novel :-).

Fun with Law!!

This is a funny article however, i like the judgement
Under UK law most food carries no VAT. However, coated biscuits and "potato crisps, potato sticks, potato puffs and similar products made from the potato, or from potato flour, or from potato starch", are subject to a tax of 15 per cent.......

.....The company argued that Pringles were not potatoey enough to be taxed.

"There is more than enough potato content for it to be a reasonable view that it is made from potato," he said.
I wonder how many packs did the judge have to eat to confirm that it was "Potatoey" enough to be brought under the VAT ruling which applies to the potato based products in UK.

One more cool verdict is here
The judgment is rare in many ways, as it confirms that electromagnetic waves emitted during power transmission could be injurious to health. Neither the court nor the state questioned the district magistrate's finding that the emission from power lines can affect hens' egg-laying capacity.
I hope only the hens are the ones who are effected ;-)

No more "Breaking News" ?

A couple of months back i had written about how excessive media penetration into various issues was causing more harm than good.

This article here talks about a government gearing up to curtail media independence via a new bill.
Under the draft rules framed under section 69A of the IT
amendment Act, every state or Central government department will be empowered to
decide whether a certain news item, article, blog or advertisement relating to
its jurisdiction is safe to remain on the Net.
That is good in one way. However, what now concerns me who will constitute this department in the government which shall decide on content safety? If this becomes similar to the censor board which governs our films then the decision would really be a nightmare.

I would still like to see a committee which governs certain content that is publicly available. This committee should constitute of some eminent people from different walks of the society so that there is s correct judgment with regards to the content and no vested interests are taken into consideration.

Election 2009 - Googly?

Congress has won and BJP has lost...the writing is on the wall (and on almost every other newspaper worth of its salt). There has been a rush of theories trying to show that this was obvious ( like it always happens). However, it is very clear that even the UPA did not expect such a mandate. Infact, the markets were very nervous on the friday with news of a hung parliment making rounds.

What really happened during the different phases of the election?
I am not a guru on these topics to give a lot of inputs. However, i have been trying to understand what happened.
For one, there was the anti-incumbancy factor that was against the Congress. There were other major problems including the Terrorist attack in November and foolish and irrational statements made by the congress leaders afterwards. Yet, Congress managed to be one of the favorites among the metros ( Sweeping Delhi with all 7 seats!!).
Technically speaking, the NDA was a in a very good position to win this elections.

However, the BJP tone was not really the best. Though it portayed strength and a strong leader it also showed that it was more interested in portarying what UPA had not done rather that what they wanted to do. There was enough mud-slinging in the last few days of election campaigning that could perturb any  sane BJP supporter. The article here differs with the above view and makes a good reading.

The other school of thought is that the youth voted out the BJP. I do not agree to this in totality. However, it is true that the "Mangalore Pub incident" ( though BJP was not directly involved) changed the young voters sentiments. Also, they felt that they could relate to Mr. Rahul Gandhi who represented the youth. Sometimes i just feel that it was a case of  " A known devil is better than an unknown angel".

What should BJP do if it intends to come back ?
First it should try to understand why they lost some of their home grounds. From 50 odd seats a decade back in UP to just 8. That is a pointer that there is something really going wrong. Second, shed the saffron image to an extent when it makes logical sense. Swapan Dasgupta puts it aptly here
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In
2004, the Congress didn't win the election, the BJP lost it.......

The
BJP must once again ask the question it once addressed but has conveniently
forgotten to ask of late: is it content to being a sectional player or does it
want to be a serious contender for power?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Promotion of younger blood up the ranks is a must for a young and exuberant growing economy. With the youth and the village folks making up a majority of the poplulation i guess it is time that the NDA looks into these aspects also.

Having said all that, and having said that again.....In the end In a country like India.....elections and governments are bound to be unpredicatable....Thatz why they say, India is not a country it is a subcontinent. Good part is that we do not have a fractured mandate and hopefully we will have a strong and capable govenment for the next five years.
(If not, you will see me writing something again in this regard...claiming why it all had to happen :P)

[ Btw, some folks in my office feel that the poll results could be rigged...no comments!!]

Update: One more nice article that i came across.

Principal with no principles

I always thought that it was our teachers who are supposed to be stopping or at least trying to stop students from cheating and malpractice during examinations. Surprisingly, this shows that it is not only limited to students but also to principals. I think gone are the days when we would could proudly say
"Guru Brahma,Guru Vishnu Guru Devo"

The tale of shoes

My good friend Rohit came up with this after seeing the shoe-throwing sessions that are happening. Apparently, there has been a neat rise in sales of Bata shoes as reported in the link. I guess our politicians are atleast contributing to the shoe sales if not anything else.

Why do we live in fear?

This piece by Anurag Kashap makes a good reading. In the article he asks a very question very pertinent to the current situation in India.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Politicians
can go up on stage and say anything without fear; why is it that we
have to live in fear? Why is it that I can't say anything? Why is it
that Narendra Modi can abuse Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh and
question them; why can't I question them?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vivekananda said and i quote here
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fear is
death, fear is sin, fear is hell, fear is unrighteousness. All the
negative thoughts and ideas that are in this world have proceeded from
this evil spirit of fear.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are we not living death in Vivekananda's words. I think today most of our actions are not drawn out of our will but out of our fear. We pay bribes because we fear that else our work is never gonna happen, We let our politicians talk nonsense because we know that our voice will be subdued by their power.

Unless, we wakeup and try to improve our situation nothing will happen. I remember one of the first few slokas i learnt  in my school days had a line which goes like this...

"Na hi suptasya simhasya, Pravishanti mukhe mrugaha".

Which when translated means, that no animal will enter the mouth of a sleeping lion. Unless we shed our fear and take the matter into our hands no one is going to provide us with a very nice society in a platter.

Think about it......

KDE desktop on Ubuntu

After much pestering from my brother i installed the KDE desktop on Ubuntu. This can be easily downloaded using synaptic. Just search for Kubuntu desktop. The KDE desktop looks much better and has many features which are really eye candy. The one which i liked the most was the Desktop Cube. You can switch between different desktops by using Ctrl+F11, and what you get is an extremely cool animation where each desktop becomes the side of a cube and you can rotate the cube using the arrorw keys and choose the needed desktop by hitting enter key. This is not enabled by default, but can be enabled easily by using the "system settings" option. You might have to change some mouse settings ( I had to because my mouse single click was opening applications)

For now i like the KDE desktop environment. However, i know i will get bored of it sooner or later. But, it is good to have Vista like or better features free of cost. Worth a try i would say.
