The Root Cause

I have said this before and i say it again,

Dont punish all the drivers, if only a handful are parking in parking meant for physically disabled.

However, that seems to be the way our politicians, policy makers, managers and teachers work. The term root cause analysis,  is perhaps most used and abused only in the software industry. Everyone else needs a quick solution. Lets look at the facts

1. The article in TOI blames the censor board for its strictness and how a "A" tag may change the future for the movie. - While there has been a neverending debate on what should be allowed on the screen and what deleted; and Producers and Directors crying fowl everytime something from their movies was thrashed, what really makes sense is to educate the people about what rating contains what type of scenes. The problem is that we have only single stage system where above 18 everything is legally allowed. However, frankly speaking i don't think everyone of us is mature enough at the age of 18. This is because no one really knows what content is accessible to an under 18 year.  Beeping out cuss words in a movie and making the same available on youtube, which by the way is more accessible to a teenager than a ticket to the cinemas is really not a solution.

2. The article here talk abouts the (in)famous John Doe order by the Madras High court banning all torrent sites is another such example. It is nothing new that a multitude of indians download stuff from the internet via torrents. The majority of it is illegal or pirated software. However, people should understand that the root cause of piracy is the cost of the software. What works in the west may not work for us. India needs a different software model which is affordable to the average pc user. For example paying 200 bucks for an antivirus for 1 year sounds doable but buying something worth 12K is not. There is a often talked about concept called reverse Innovation.

3. I know of a company which did a blanket ban on long term foreign travel because some of the ex-employees stayed aboard for long durations and then switched to a different company directly from there. The problem is that many other people do lose a lot of oppurtunities because of this.

However, back to the point from what we started...Root cause analysis is necessary. In every problem there is a root cause which if handled in an amicable way will solve the problem for a very long time. It is only the skill that is lacking in identifying these root problems.
