Creating drives from Folders in XP.

This is more of a technical post rather than what you normall find on my blog...
This is a problem i faced in Delphi ( my previous employer) and now with my current one too i have the same problem. The problem is that because of maintenance issues i get only one drive "C:" in my office computer. This means i cannot organize my data into different drives. If there are some tool chains ( like the ones that exist in most companies) which need some things to be in certain drives then you are really gonna have a trouble.

How to solve this?
Thankfully, there is  command in windows called subst which can be used to make a folder look like a virtual drive. This means you can for example have folders like c:\e, c:\f c:\j etc and then write the following commands to make them appear like drives
subst e: c:\e
subst f: c:\f
etc.
Now the best part is most softwares can use these as if they were real drives. I have known only very few softwares which have a problem with this. One of them is Activestate products like (perl, python). You can put these commands in a batch file and put them in your startup folder so that they will map on every login. The easiest way to remove the drives is by using the command below
subst delete e:
Now aint that really cool ;-). I would be putting some computer related stuff on the blog hence forth since i see a lot of people struggling with these simple tasks.

Apparently the problem is solved in Win 7 using some concept of virtual drives. I need to check that out.

Meatville

Makes me wonder if this is really successful one day would it be easy for one to eat....
The article states that
No one has yet tasted their produce, but it is believed the artificial meat
could be on sale within five years.

I find the idea a bit repelling, because by growing artificial meat we are trying to break some of the rules that mother nature has laid down for us. At the same time i see that the idea is welcomed by animal protection activists and also the vegetarian crowd as well. I know that like anything else this would have its own group of folks who will not like the idea and vehemently oppose it. My only question is how safe this artificial meat would be and are we doing the right thing. Criction in his book prey says and i quote....
"They didn’t understand what they were doing. I’m afraid that will be on the tombstone of the human race."
Hope that this is not the case here!!

The hectic week.

The week that just passed by was a real hectic one to say the least. If i assume Sunday to saturday as a week, then the week began with a visit to the bookfair on palace ground. The last day's of book fairs are always like a double edged sword. On one hand you will find a lot of books at extremely discounted rates, on the other a lot of good books are already taken up. However, there were two interesting things that i found out from the course. First is the website called librarywala.com. This is a library where one can order the book online and it will be delivered at your doorstep. I checked out the prices and they were very reasonable considering that they have a wide range of books starting from fiction, business and self-help. So make sure you go and take a look at the website. Maybe it will help you to satisfy your hunger for new books.  The next wonderful things that i found was about a website called flipkart.com. It is a site from where you can order books and you get very good discounts.
In the following days things were not really very interesting. I was responsible for some interviews and trust me they are not the best things to do during the week. Then the models ( matlab ones) did not seem to work the way i expected them. Even a real hard struggle with them only resulted in some very poor solutions. Saturday however came as a great break. I went to the Open day at Goethe-Institut....I will be doing advertising for Goethe by wearing their shirt ...For which i had to shell out 100 bucks :P.

Anyway hope to see some good interesting results with my model this week so that the coming weeks will be more peaceful :D.

Dangerous birds?

I had heard that a flock of birds is dangerous for an airplane and a flock of girls dangerous for anyone. ...but i did not know this....
Police said the low-flying bird distracted the man, causing him to veer off a road and drive his French-built Bugatti Veyron into a salt marsh.
That too a Bugatti....what where you thinking dude?

Its My way or the Highway- Govt

This is what happens when you make a bunch of idiots take decisions.
The Government will not sanction any Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) for an employee who uses personal car or taxi as mode of transport.
Ok...from the first statement I understand that the government is trying to provide some business to the  State/Central Government owned Transport mechanisms. This also means that it believes that these systems are on par or atleast comparable with the private operators. However, the next line shows something else
However, the rule shall not be applicable to employees with a handicap or disability of self or dependent family member.
What does this show!!...That if  I want to travel by JetAirways because it costs me less i should first get my self a disability or bring a physically challenged friend along...WTF!! This is a classic case of solving the wrong problem. The problem is that the sales of tickets in Government carriers is less because they do not offer the value for money ( be it in terms of service quality or comfort). This cannot be solved by forcing people to use it...No!!....Upgrade them, improve them make them attractive...cut down the excessive flab!!

Alas!....Who cares..
Mantriji always insisted on having his aircraft tank full...and would get it fully refuelled everytime it landed. On asking what was the reason...
"The only time you feel you have too much fuel on this worn out planes is when you're on fire"
Good answer mantriji!!
